Camping at high altitudes and waking up freezing in the middle of the night from the ground chill? Traditional inflatable mats puncture easily, while foil pads are hard and slippery. This year, a "lazy camper's solution" has emerged in the outdoor community: bring two canisters of liquid and "inflate" a custom silicone foam pad on-site—it expands 5 times in 20 minutes, weighs as little as 200 grams, and blocks ground chill down to -20°C.

The material is room-temperature foaming liquid silicone. Mix parts A and B in a 1:1 ratio into a zip-lock bag, knead for 30 seconds, and a chemical reaction—like opening a soda—begins to bubble and foam, automatically filling every corner of the tent. It forms an "elastic carpet" with a density of 0.25 g/cm³.

"The most surprising part is the insulation value," according to tests by an outdoor club. At the same 10 mm thickness, the foam silicone has a thermal conductivity of 0.06 W/m·K, which is 30% lower than wool felt. This cuts heat loss in half when camping on snow, allowing sleeping bag warmth ratings to drop from -10°C to -20°C—effectively adding a mini heater.

The fatigue resistance is equally impressive: after 20,000 cycles of compression under a 50 kg sandbag, the thickness only decreases by 5%. In contrast, traditional EVA foam collapses by 30% after just 5,000 cycles under the same test. Even better, it’s weather-resistant: after 200 hours under UV light, the surface remains non-tacky and doesn’t crumble, making it immune to intense high-altitude UV rays.

What to do after camping? Simply slice along the tent edges with a blade—the foam pad separates instantly from the tent, rolls up for easy transport, and leaves no trace of waste on-site. For eco-conscious campers, this is even friendlier than digging a waste pit.

From mountaineering tents and RV insulation doors to "inner liners" for drone transport cases and shock-absorbing pads for fishing boxes, this "on-site grown" silicone foam is taking outdoor gear lightweighting, insulation, and personalization to new heights. It turns out the ultimate camping gear is a gentle foam that lets you carry a piece of "home" wherever you go.
