The "Invisible Armor" of PV Power Plants: How Liquid Silicone Rubber Guards Every Ray of Sunshine

On vast stretches of the Gobi Desert or atop urban residential buildings, rows of photovoltaic (PV) panels work silently to convert sunlight into clean electricity. We often marvel at the grand scale of solar technology, yet rarely notice the "invisible heroes" that guard the long-term operation of PV modules in the smallest details. Among them, liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is one of the most critical. Although it is inconspicuous, LSR acts like a tough "invisible armor," protecting expensive PV equipment from the erosion of wind, frost, rain, and snow, ensuring that every ray of sunlight is efficiently utilized.

PV modules are exposed year-round to extremely harsh environmental conditions. At midday in summer, the surface temperature of a module can reach as high as 70–80°C; in the depth of winter, they must withstand sub-zero temperatures. In addition, intense UV radiation, acid rain, salt spray, and sand abrasion constantly threaten the lifespan of the modules. Traditional encapsulating materials, under long-term thermal cycling, tend to age, yellow, or even crack, leading to moisture ingress that corrodes internal circuits and ultimately turns PV panels into "scrap."

The advent of LSR has completely changed this situation. This material inherently possesses outstanding weather resistance. It is not afraid of UV radiation and will not yellow even under prolonged exposure, ensuring high light transmittance for the PV module so that sunlight can pass through the encapsulant layer unobstructed to reach the solar cells. More importantly, LSR acts like a "Transformer," exhibiting excellent elasticity. When drastic temperature changes cause the module materials to thermally expand and contract, LSR expands and contracts accordingly, releasing stress without becoming brittle like rigid adhesives. This characteristic of "softness overcoming hardness" greatly extends the service life of PV modules, making the investment return for power plants more secure.

Beyond serving as a shield against external threats, LSR also acts as an "adhesive" for PV modules. It plays a critical role in encapsulating the PV junction box. The junction box is the hub for current transmission, containing a dense array of precision electronic components. LSR has excellent fluidity, allowing it to penetrate like water into every corner of the junction box, filling tiny gaps and forming a dense protective layer after curing. This not only achieves perfect waterproof sealing but also provides outstanding electrical insulation, effectively preventing leakage and short circuits.

Currently, with the evolution of PV technology, bifacial modules and flexible modules are gaining increasing popularity. These new module types demand greater flexibility and adhesion from encapsulating materials. Leveraging its unique physical and chemical properties, LSR perfectly meets these requirements, making it the material of choice for high-end PV modules. It not only makes PV panels lighter and thinner but also improves power generation efficiency. Indeed, behind every kilowatt-hour of clean electricity, LSR works silently as an indispensable guardian – it is truly the "invisible armor" of the PV industry.
