Seal failure is a seemingly minor issue in industrial equipment that often has significant consequences. Oil leaks, air leaks, and water leaks are frequently caused not by poor design but by incorrect material selection. Among the many sealing options available, liquid silicone rubber (LSR) sealants have become a common choice for mid-to-high-end equipment, thanks to their exceptional temperature and weather resistance.
A qualified sealant must meet at least three criteria: sufficient adhesive strength, high elastic recovery, and good weatherability. Liquid silicone rubber performs well across all three dimensions. Its service temperature typically ranges from -60°C to 250°C, and it maintains elasticity under thermal cycling without hardening or becoming brittle. Additionally, it offers good resistance to UV radiation and ozone, making it suitable for long-term outdoor use.
Liquid silicone rubber sealants are now well established in various applications: waterproof sealing of automotive headlamps, airtight sealing of appliance joints, waterproofing of LED luminaires, and structural sealing of new energy battery packs. In particular, the new energy battery pack sector demands not only waterproofing and dustproofing but also compliance with IP67 or even higher protection ratings.
When selecting a sealant, several parameters deserve special attention: tensile strength determines bond integrity; elongation at break reflects the material's elasticity margin; and compatibility with the substrate directly impacts long-term reliability. We recommend conducting small-batch process validation before full-scale production.
Sealing may be a detail, but choosing the right material can significantly elevate the overall reliability of your equipment.
