Causes and Solutions for "Poor Surface Gloss" in Liquid Silicone Rubber Products

Hits: 280 img

Surface gloss is an important appearance indicator for liquid silicone rubber products, particularly for consumer electronics accessories, medical device housings, and other products with high appearance requirements. Products exhibiting low surface gloss, dullness, or inconsistent gloss across different areas of the same product are issues frequently encountered on the production floor.

Insufficient Vulcanization: The Primary Cause of Poor Gloss

The degree of vulcanization directly affects the product surface's ability to replicate the mold's surface finish. When vulcanization time is insufficient or mold temperature is too low, the crosslinking reaction is incomplete, and the silicone has not fully set upon demolding, preventing the surface from precisely replicating the mirror-finish effect of the mold cavity, manifesting as low gloss.

It is worth noting that poor gloss caused by insufficient vulcanization is often accompanied by other signs, such as surface stickiness, insufficient mechanical strength, or oversized dimensions. Technical personnel can check these associated indicators to assist in diagnosis.

Mold Surface Condition: The "Master Template" of Gloss

The surface condition of the mold cavity is the foundation determining product gloss. If the mold cavity surface is rough, shows wear marks, or has not been polished, these defects will be directly reflected on the product surface. For products with high gloss requirements, the mold cavity requires mirror polishing, with hard chrome plating applied when necessary to enhance surface finish and wear resistance.

The use of mold release agents requires particular attention. Excessive dosage or uneven spraying of mold release agent forms a mist-like residue on the product surface, severely affecting gloss consistency. Technical documentation recommends minimizing mold release agent usage while ensuring smooth demolding, or selecting release agent types with less impact on gloss.

Synergistic Effects of Material and Process

Uneven mixing or contamination of silicone may cause localized differences in vulcanization degree, reflected as uneven gloss on the surface. When the A/B component mixing ratio deviates from 1:1, crosslink density changes, similarly affecting surface quality.

Excessively fast injection speed may produce surface turbulence marks, which appear as gloss variations under light. For products with high appearance requirements, a moderate injection speed is recommended to allow the melt to fill the cavity smoothly.

Troubleshooting Recommendations

Troubleshooting poor surface gloss should follow the sequence of "first adjust vulcanization parameters, then check mold condition, and finally verify material and process." Prioritize confirming whether vulcanization time and mold temperature match the material's technical requirements; next, check whether the mold cavity surface is clean and free of damage; finally, verify mold release agent usage and injection speed settings.
