How Long Can Coating Silicone Be Stored After Opening? How to Prevent Premature Crosslinking of the Compound

Hits: 262 img

During storage and use of coating silicone, post-opening storage management directly affects subsequent application results. Some customers have found that after a period of storage following opening, the compound exhibits increased viscosity, surface skinning, reduced leveling performance, or abnormal curing—these issues are typically related to storage conditions, sealing methods, and dispensing practices. Proper management of opened compound helps reduce waste and maintain consistent coating quality.

The shelf life of coating silicone should be based on product labels and technical documentation. In unopened condition, products typically need to be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated environment, avoiding direct sunlight and high-temperature conditions. After opening, the compound's contact area with air increases, and if not resealed promptly, surface skinning or viscosity changes may occur. Therefore, after each dispensing, the drum lid or bag opening should be promptly resealed to minimize the compound's exposure time to air.

For one-component coating silicone, ambient humidity may affect its curing behavior. If packaging is not tightly sealed, the compound surface may react prematurely, forming a skin or gel layer. Before use, the surface condition should be checked; if obvious skinning, increased particles, or abnormal viscosity is found, direct use for critical protection areas should be avoided. For two-component coating silicone, A/B components should be stored separately sealed, and mixed in proportion only before use, avoiding prolonged standing after premature mixing.

During dispensing, clean, dry tools should be used to prevent moisture, dust, or other impurities from entering the packaging container. Compounds from different batches are not recommended to be mixed for storage, to avoid batch variations affecting application performance. If an enterprise's production pace is slow, large packages can be subdivided into smaller packages to reduce contamination risks from repeated opening.

Whether the compound is still usable can be preliminarily judged from appearance, viscosity, odor, and curing performance. If obvious stratification, agglomeration, abnormal thickening, or unstable performance after curing occurs, use for formal production should be discontinued, and the supplier can be contacted for confirmation. Our company provides storage recommendations and technical support for coating silicone products. Customers can select appropriate packaging specifications based on actual usage frequency and request corresponding technical documentation and batch information.
