Mold silicone can be used to reproduce master patterns of various materials, but different master pattern materials have different requirements for the reproduction process. Understanding the characteristics of common master pattern materials helps proactively avoid issues such as mold sticking, curing abnormalities, detail loss, and demolding difficulties.
3D-printed parts are one of the common master pattern materials. Stereolithography (SLA) 3D-printed parts have good surface detail but may contain incompletely cured resin, requiring attention to cleaning and post-curing. FDM-printed parts typically have layer lines, and surface roughness will be transferred to the mold; sanding or spray coating may be performed when necessary. Some 3D printing materials may affect addition-cure silicone curing, and a small-area test is recommended before use.
Resin master patterns have high strength and can achieve relatively smooth surfaces, suitable for reproduction requiring high detail. However, if the resin is not fully cured or contains certain additives, it may adversely affect mold silicone curing. Plaster and cement-based master patterns are lower in cost and suitable for large sculptures, handicrafts, or architectural models, but their porous nature requires pore sealing treatment; otherwise, mold sticking or surface defects readily occur.
Metal, glass, ceramic, and other dense material master patterns have stable surfaces that are not prone to deformation, suitable for repeated reproduction. Such master patterns can typically be used after cleaning and drying, but release agent compatibility still requires attention. Plastic master patterns require attention to whether mold release agent residue remains on the surface; some plastics have low surface energy, which may affect mold silicone wetting performance.
Different master pattern materials also have different requirements for mold hardness. Small parts with rich detail are suitable for softer or medium-hardness mold silicone to facilitate demolding; large parts or molds requiring support can use slightly higher hardness grades to reduce deformation. Our company provides mold silicone products suitable for different master pattern materials. Customers can provide master pattern material, dimensions, surface condition, and reproduction count requirements to obtain more suitable material selection recommendations.
