What Treatments Does the Master Pattern Need Before Mold Silicone Is Poured?

Hits: 255 img

The reproduction quality of mold silicone depends not only on the compound itself but is also closely related to master pattern preparation. Many reproduction failures—such as loss of surface detail, mold sticking, excessive bubbles, demolding difficulties, or short mold life—are often related to inadequate master pattern cleaning, drying, pore sealing, and release treatment. Proper master pattern preparation before formal pouring can significantly improve mold quality.

The master pattern surface should be kept clean, removing oil contamination, dust, mold release agent residue, and other contaminants. If the master pattern is a 3D-printed part, the surface may have layer lines, uncured resin, or support marks that require sanding and cleaning. If resin-type master patterns are not fully cured, they may affect mold silicone curing—particularly for addition-cure systems, which should avoid contact with incompletely reacted resin or sulfur- and nitrogen-containing substances.

Plaster, cement, and other porous material master patterns typically require pore sealing treatment. If the master pattern has numerous pores, mold silicone may penetrate into the pores, causing demolding difficulties or damage to surface details. Dedicated pore sealants or appropriate coatings can be used for sealing, with reproduction conducted after the surface dries. Metal, glass, ceramic, and other dense material master patterns have relatively smooth surfaces but still require cleaning and drying, with appropriate release agents used when necessary.

The choice of release agent should match the mold silicone system. Some release agents may affect addition-cure silicone curing, and a small-area test is recommended before use. For master patterns with complex structures, attention should be paid to draft angle and parting line design to avoid demolding damage from excessive undercuts.

Master pattern temperature also affects the pouring process. A master pattern that is too cold or too hot may affect compound flowability and curing speed. It is recommended to conduct reproduction in a stable room-temperature environment and avoid operating under conditions with significant humidity fluctuations. Our company provides mold silicone and related technical support. Customers can provide master pattern material, dimensions, surface condition, and reproduction requirements to obtain more suitable treatment recommendations.
