Low-Odor Performance of Coating Silicone and Its Significance in Skin-Contact Products

Hits: 238 img

Odor is an indicator that is easily overlooked in coating silicone applications yet directly affects customer experience. Particularly when used in gloves, insoles, sports protective gear, wearable accessories, and household products, noticeable coating odor may affect the user experience during unboxing, wearing, or storage. Low-odor performance is typically related to material formulation, degree of curing, volatile substance control, and production processes.

During the curing of coating silicone, some low-molecular-weight substances may be gradually released over time. If curing conditions are inadequate, or the coating is relatively thick, the internal substance release rate may slow down, resulting in residual odor after product packaging. Different formulations exhibit differences in odor performance, and the final odor level cannot be judged solely by material type. For products requiring skin contact or entering sealed packaging, low-odor performance is particularly important.

Reducing coating odor can be addressed from multiple stages. First, select material systems with better volatile substance control; second, ensure adequate curing temperature and time for full coating crosslinking; third, control coating thickness to avoid internal release difficulties caused by excessive thickness; finally, optimize packaging methods, allowing products appropriate ventilation time. For export products, attention should also be paid to target market requirements for odor, volatile substances, and related testing.

Odor testing can combine sensory evaluation with sealed storage observation. Coated samples can be placed in sealed containers for a certain period, then opened to observe odor changes. Actual packaging conditions can also be simulated to evaluate product odor performance after transportation and storage. It should be noted that odor perception is somewhat subjective, and testing should maintain environmental consistency as much as possible, combined with customer feedback for comprehensive judgment.

Low-odor coating silicone is more suitable for products with higher user experience requirements—for example, sports gloves, children's product accessories, wearable device straps, household anti-slip mats, and skin-contact protective gear. When promoting such products, enterprises can present low odor as one of the experience advantages, but statements should be based on actual test results, avoiding exaggeration.

The odor performance of coating silicone is closely related to materials, processes, and use environment. By optimizing formulations, curing conditions, and packaging methods, user experience can be enhanced while maintaining coating performance. For brand customers who value end-user experience, low odor is not only a quality detail but also an important factor in improving product acceptance.
