Reuse Count and Cost Assessment of Liquid Mold Silicone

Hits: 231 img

Liquid mold silicone is commonly used for small-batch reproduction and prototyping. Compared with hard molds, silicone molds offer lower mold-making costs and stronger detail reproduction capability, but their reuse count is not unlimited. How many times a mold can reproduce depends on material performance, workpiece structure, pouring material, demolding method, and maintenance conditions.

For workpieces with simple structures, silicone molds can typically achieve a relatively high reproduction count; for workpieces with undercuts, thin walls, fine textures, or sharp edges, the mold is subjected to certain stress during each demolding cycle, and service life may be correspondingly shortened. The pouring material also affects mold life. Some materials generate high exotherm during curing or contain components unfriendly to silicone, which may accelerate mold aging. Therefore, when determining mold use count, evaluation should be conducted in combination with the specific pouring system.

Cost assessment cannot look only at the one-time mold-making cost; average cost per reproduction also needs to be considered. If a mold can stably reproduce a relatively high number of times, the per-unit cost will be correspondingly lower; if the mold develops deformation, tearing, or detail blurring after only a small number of reproductions, rework and re-mold-making costs may increase. Before batch reproduction, enterprises can observe mold condition through small-batch trial molding, recording reproduction count, demolding difficulty, and changes in finished product quality, thereby more accurately assessing economic viability.

To extend mold service life, the following aspects can be addressed: selecting materials with better tear resistance and dimensional stability; reasonably designing parting surfaces and outer mold support; controlling pouring material curing temperature; standardizing demolding operations; and promptly cleaning residual material from the mold surface. For molds requiring long-term use, regularly check detail fidelity to avoid dimensional deviation in finished products caused by mold wear.

The reuse count of liquid mold silicone is an important indicator measuring its application value. When purchasing, enterprises can provide suppliers with workpiece structure, pouring material, expected use count, and dimensional precision requirements to obtain more suitable material recommendations. Through scientific assessment of mold life, enterprises can reduce prototyping costs and improve small-batch production efficiency.
