Compatibility of Liquid Mold Silicone with Different Pouring Materials

Hits: 230 img

Liquid mold silicone is often used in combination with various pouring materials such as resin, plaster, wax, polyurethane, and cement-based materials. Different materials differ in curing method, exotherm, viscosity, and chemical characteristics, so their compatibility with silicone molds is not entirely the same. Choosing the right combination helps improve reproduction success rates and extend mold service life.

Resin-based materials are commonly used for reproducing handicrafts, figurines, and decorative parts. Some resins generate high exotherm during curing; if the mold is thin or heat dissipation is inadequate, accelerated mold surface aging may occur. Plaster-based materials are lower in cost and suitable for larger-volume reproduction, but plaster slurry contains water—if the mold has not been appropriately treated, demolding results may be affected. Wax patterns are commonly used in lost-wax casting, with certain requirements for mold temperature resistance and surface finish. Polyurethane materials come in many types, and some formulations may have compatibility differences with silicone; small-sample testing is recommended before use.

Compatibility testing can be observed from aspects including demolding ease, surface fidelity, mold deformation, and reuse count. If demolding is difficult, release treatment may need optimization or mold hardness adjusted; if surface detail is lost, material flowability and venting conditions can be checked; if the mold develops swelling, tackiness, or cracking, attention should be paid to whether the pouring material composition is compatible with the silicone.

For new materials being used for the first time, it is not recommended to proceed directly to large-batch reproduction. Small samples or small-volume pours can first be used to validate mold performance—after confirming smooth demolding, stable dimensions, and no obvious mold damage, production can be gradually scaled up. If the product requires long-term reproduction, the mold condition after each demolding should also be recorded to help judge the long-term impact of the material on the mold.

The matching of liquid mold silicone with pouring materials is an important prerequisite for successful mold-making. When selecting materials, enterprises should consider both silicone performance and pouring material characteristics, rather than evaluating a single indicator in isolation. Through preliminary testing and process optimization, reproduction stability can be improved and trial-and-error costs reduced.
